World of Goo Pirated?

November 19, 2008 at 10:12 am by Koslov | Games, Politics | No Comments »

Say it aint so. Shit they did. Well at least this blog and this blog did.  The first one done by 4 guys with accents, touches on the fact that their comments section and fourms were nearly killed in the cross fire of people screaming and point fingers at each other, then they talk about piracy and 2DBoy’s numbers and belief in that DRM would not have saved their game from piracy.  Chris over at 1 fort says something similar minus the comments section nearly dieing.

But I guess I have to eat my own words and loss more faith in humanity.  Apperently the old addage of “why buy when you can have for free?” is a rule people live by now.  Well at least in the PC Gaming world.  Its truly sad that people would pirate such and original game.  An indie one that that but then of course people are self indulging dick holes and dont see the bigger picture.

Top two reasons companies make games:

1. Make Money (DUH!!)

2. Because the people that work for the companies like games (DUR!!)

Top two reasons People Pirate games:

1. Dont want to spend money (OKAY!)

2. Because the people that pirate games really like to play said games (HUH!!)

There are more reasons but I would just like to point out that people have two things on the mind while this vicious cycle is running, Money and games.  Damn those evils.  I guess we need to find a happy medium.

I for one like to purchase my games.  That way I feel superior to those other assholes.

Star Trek… wait what?

Apperently the guy behind LOST has decided to make a new Star Trek.  I know this is old news but when I saw the trailer, I said the folowing:

“Holy shit, that is cool.”

See for yourself:

Oh My, that Xaser is a busy little gamer.

Xaser sent me a link earlier today while I was off getting my drink on at a garden party. Yeah I was dragged off to it kicking and screaming but then when I was handed a large glass full of wine, the pain all of a sudden became mute.

But anyways, back to the original subject:

Xaser put together this video of him kicking ass in Grid. At the end you see that he has pretty much made the game his bitch. If you enjoy a little racing to a good tune, watch it. If you don’t like any of the above mentioned things, you suck and do not deserve access to the internet.

New ASUS XGStation!

Crimson showed me this little device today and I was pretty impressed. What this baby is is a portable graphic card and sound card essentially. It is built for users who have a not so great laptop. This will give you the full capabilities of a graphic card and 5.1 stereo surround sound card.

It hooks up simply via the wireless card slot on your laptop, once hooked up you got it going. The system comes with GeForce 8600GT 256MB. It seems to be a pretty impressive little device, check out the photos below. Read more about it at their website.

Open World Games: Revisited

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

I’m sure many of you remember my post I made a few weeks ago about the release of Far Cry 2 and a discussion of open world games. Lately I’ve had a lot of new experiences with these open world games and I wanted to give some added insight.

In my last article, I mentioned that open world games, although very cool, can get really boring really fast. I have learned that this is true in some cases but not in others. I have had about 3 hours of playtime in Far Cry 2 so far and I believe this does reign true…open world can get boring. Part of the reason is that the majority of the scenery is identical and when you revisit an area you were JUST at there are a whole slew of enemies there again. This hurts the realism thus making an open world game seem uneccessary.

Gooey DRM, the other argument.

November 4, 2008 at 11:54 pm by Koslov | Games | 1 Comment »

In continuation of my exploration into the world of DRM, I have come across few companies that have decided to take the high route as opposed to the low route.  One of these companies is 2DBoy, and their Indie Darling, World of Goo.  I paid attention to the praises that were expunged onto the game.  I download the teaser beta that showed off the physics that those cute little gooey balls possessed.  RPS (Rock Paper Shotgun) spent many days gooing their pants about how much fun the game was.  So much so that I broke down a few days before it came out and did the Pay Pal pre-order from the 2DBoy site.  It was a truly awesome game.  What was weird was that the developers sent me an email that gave me a link to download the first chapter and kindly thanked me for purchasing their game and not pirating it.  And for my generosity, they promised to provide me the game without any form of copy protection.  These guys put their trust in me, their customer.

Update on the Kolsov Projects

November 4, 2008 at 12:14 am by Koslov | Mass Effect, Side Projects, WTF! Factor, Women | 1 Comment »

The promised Web Comic that I said I am working on is about half way done.  I am finalizing the last few editions of the first chapter before I am confidant that we can release slowly and begin the next chapter.  Below is a quick promo that I put together while I was bored while in a meeting about fiscal responsibility at my place of business.  What do I care, I’m not allowed to have paperclips after the great Rubber Band War ‘07.  Something about immaturity and “improbably accidentally pierced nipples”.

The Future of Games. What’s Next?

October 29, 2008 at 6:21 pm by VertigoSFX | Games, Technology | 2 Comments »

I found this interesting article over on Popular Science’s website about the most realistic video games that have been created to date. These games all include some sort of revolutionary change in gaming that pushes the bar up one step further.

Fallout 3 was the highlight of the article. In Fallout 3, injuries are “dynamic” in which depending on where you hit someone the reaction and effects are different. In Force Unleashed for the consoles, they have worked out the physics so that everything is lifelike. Things break realistically and humans interact realistically with every muscle showing different effects with the action being made to the character. The new Tom Clancy’s End War has voice recognition in single player so you can give commands to your teammates in a futuristic wartorn battlezone and it is supposed to be 90% accurate. Quite impressive.

To read more of the article visit Popular Science.

So what do you guys think will amaze us in 5 years? 10 years? What kind of games do you think we will be seeing later on down the line that we wouldn’t even begin to imagine today?
